Wall Fan Coil FAQ
Answers about sizing, installation, compatibility, and performance for the Apollo wall fan coil unit.
The Apollo Wall Fan Coil comes in two sizes: the 1.5-ton AP-FCU-18K covers 400–900 ft², and the 3-ton AP-FCU-36K covers 800–1,300 ft². For larger properties, multiple fan coil units can share a single air-to-water heat pump via a common hydronic loop. If your space falls in the overlap zone (800–900 ft²), choose the 3-ton if your climate is more heating-dominant, or if you plan to add zones later.
The 1.5-ton AP-FCU-18K delivers 12,000 BTU of cooling and 18,400 BTU of heating. The 3-ton AP-FCU-36K delivers 18,500 BTU of cooling and 31,500 BTU of heating. Actual output depends on the entering water temperature from your heat pump — higher supply temperatures increase heating output, and lower temperatures improve cooling efficiency.
Yes. The Apollo Wall Fan Coil is designed for hydronic systems, including air-to-water heat pumps. It connects to the heat pump's hot or chilled water loop via ½" NPT threaded fittings. One heat pump can supply multiple fan coil units simultaneously — making it possible to condition several zones without running refrigerant lines to each room.
Any standard 24VAC fan coil unit (FCU) thermostat is compatible. For Wi-Fi scheduling and remote control, MBTEK offers a dedicated Wi-Fi Fan Coil Thermostat that pairs directly with the unit. The thermostat controls the three fan speeds and switches between heating and cooling modes based on water temperature from the heat pump.
The 1.5-ton model operates between 33 and 45 dB depending on fan speed. The 3-ton model ranges from 33 to 47 dB. At low speed, both units are quieter than a typical library (about 50 dB), making them well-suited for bedrooms, offices, and hotel rooms. The fan motor is designed to minimize vibration at all speeds.
Yes. The standard setup is a 2-pipe system where the same supply and return lines carry either hot or chilled water depending on the season — the most common configuration for residential air-to-water heat pump installations. The unit can also be integrated into 4-pipe systems where separate heating and cooling loops run simultaneously, enabling year-round independent zone control.
The wall fan coil uses ½" NPT threaded connections for both supply and return. The unit is rated to 200 PSI working pressure. During installation, a shut-off valve and air vent on each connection are recommended. Insulating the supply pipe helps prevent surface condensation during cooling operation.
The 1.5-ton AP-FCU-18K draws 33 watts and the 3-ton AP-FCU-36K draws 35 watts on a standard 120 VAC circuit. Thermostat control wiring runs at 24 VAC (low-voltage). No dedicated circuit breaker is required — the fan coil's power draw is comparable to a single LED light bulb, making it one of the most efficient ways to distribute heat pump output across multiple rooms.
Wall-mounted fan coils are surface-mounted and visible in the room — similar in profile to a mini-split indoor head. They require no ceiling access, drop-ceiling space, or ductwork, making them the fastest to retrofit into existing rooms. Concealed fan coils are hidden above a ceiling or behind a soffit and distribute air through short duct runs, which keeps the living space uncluttered but requires more construction. Ceiling cassettes mount flush into a drop ceiling and discharge air in four directions, ideal for open-plan areas. Choose wall-mounted when installation speed and simplicity matter most.
Each unit ships with a condensate drain pan and 7 feet of flexible drain tubing. You will also need a compatible 24VAC FCU thermostat (sold separately), supply and return piping with ½" NPT fittings, shut-off valves, an air vent, and a condensate drain connection. For multi-zone installations, the APOLLO Y-Connector allows two fan coil units to share a single heat pump circuit.
