Air Handling Unit FAQ
Answers about sizing, capacities, electrical and water requirements, controls, and installation for the APOLLO Central AHU 3.5, 6, and 25 Ton models.
The 3.5 Ton (1,400 CFM) suits most residential and light commercial ducted systems. The 6 Ton (2,400 CFM) is for larger homes and light commercial spaces and adds humidification, dehumidification, backup heating, and evaporative cooling. The 25 Ton is a commercial unit for large commercial buildings. Correct sizing depends on square footage, insulation, layout, climate, and heat loss, so confirm the load before ordering — use the model selector above to switch between sizes.
The 3.5 Ton delivers 1,400 CFM nominal airflow with a hydronic coil (22 × 22 × 5 in) rated up to 193,600 BTU. The 6 Ton delivers 2,400 CFM at 2.0 in. w.g. rated external static pressure with a larger coil (20 × 32 × 6 in) rated up to 460,000 BTU. Actual output depends on the entering water temperature from your heat pump — higher supply temperatures increase heating output.
The 3.5 Ton and 6 Ton both run on a 220V, 60 Hz supply. The 3.5 Ton requires a 15A breaker and the 6 Ton requires a 60A breaker. Confirm wire gauge and breaker sizing against the product manual and your local electrical code before installation.
Both the 3.5 Ton and 6 Ton use 1 in. FPT female pipe thread connections for supply and return. The recommended minimum flow rate is 17.6 GPM for the 3.5 Ton and 21.2 GPM for the 6 Ton. Fit shut-off valves and an air vent at each connection, and insulate the supply line to prevent surface condensation during cooling.
Yes. Every APOLLO Central AHU is a hydronic unit designed for the APOLLO Air to Water Heat Pump. The heat pump produces hot water for heating and chilled water for cooling, and the AHU uses that water at its coil to condition the air it distributes through your ducts. The same water loop can also serve fan coils, radiant floors, or domestic hot water.
The APOLLO Central AHU is designed for smart thermostat control and pairs with the APOLLO 24VAC FCU thermostat, available as an add-on with each model above. The thermostat manages heating and cooling changeover and fan operation based on the water temperature supplied by the heat pump.
All three models heat and cool from the same hydronic coil. The 6 Ton and 25 Ton models add humidification, dehumidification, backup heating, and integrated evaporative cooling with an automatic water feed for free or backup cooling. The 3.5 Ton focuses on efficient heating and cooling for smaller ducted systems.
Upflow and downflow describe the direction the unit moves air. An upflow unit pulls air in low and discharges out the top (typical for basement or closet installs with ducts overhead); a downflow unit discharges out the bottom (used when ducts run below, such as an attic). The 3.5 Ton and 6 Ton ship upflow as standard, with downflow and sideflow available as special order to match your duct layout.
Yes. The APOLLO Central AHU is designed to replace or upgrade an outdated central duct system. It reuses your existing ductwork while improving airflow, temperature control, and indoor air quality, and it swaps refrigerant-based equipment for a hydronic system driven by the APOLLO Air to Water Heat Pump. The 25 Ton commercial model is built specifically to modernize legacy large-building duct infrastructure.
The 3.5 Ton uses a 24 × 24 × 1 in. MERV 8 pleated filter and the 6 Ton uses a 20 × 24 × 2 in. MERV 8 pleated filter (each supplied as a 2-pack). Replace or clean the filter on a regular schedule, keep supply and return grilles clear, inspect the coil and condensate drain periodically, and check the evaporative cooling pad and its automatic water feed on models that include it. A hydronic AHU has no indoor refrigerant circuit to service.
