What a wood boiler installation actually involves
A complete wood boiler installation touches four areas: plumbing (getting water safely to and from the boiler), hookup (connecting it to your home's heating distribution), wiring (thermostats and aquastats for control), and the chimney (draft and combustion air). Skipping planning on any one of these is the most common source of installation problems.
None of these steps happen in isolation — the boiler, the chimney, the controls, and the distribution system all have to be sized and planned together, which is why MBTEK recommends confirming the full system before ordering, not just the boiler.
Plumbing basics: boiler return protection
The single most important plumbing consideration for a wood boiler is return-water temperature. If the water coming back to the boiler is too cold, it causes flue-gas condensation inside the boiler, which leads to corrosion and a shorter service life. MBTEK's Boiler Station and Boiler Protection Valve both exist to solve this: they keep return water above roughly 130°F/55°C by blending in hotter supply water until the system reaches temperature.
Two ways to handle it:
- Boiler Station: an all-in-one, pre-assembled unit combining the protection valve, a circulation pump, a thermometer, and insulation — built for 1-1/4" NPT connections, up to 50kW.

Connecting the boiler to your heating system
"Hooking up" a wood boiler means connecting it to your home's water-based heat distribution — radiant floors, radiators, or fan coils — not wiring it into a furnace. If your home currently uses a forced-air furnace, the two systems don't combine by splicing wires or gas lines together.
The realistic way to add wood-boiler heat to an existing forced-air system is a water-to-air heat exchanger coil installed in the ductwork, fed by the boiler's hot water loop. That's a distinct piece of equipment and its own planning step, not a default assumption for every project, and it's worth confirming with a specialist if your home is currently forced-air only.
For homes already on hydronic distribution, hookup is more direct: the boiler ties into the existing supply and return piping, typically through a buffer tank for stability.
Wiring: thermostats and aquastats
Two different controls handle a wood boiler system, and they do different jobs:
- Boiler Thermostat: controls room air temperature and gives a remote panel showing work modes, fuel level, and alarms for the boiler.
- Boiler Aquastat: controls water temperature only, not room air.
For a hydronic boiler system described generally, not specifically "control my room" or "control my water temperature," both are commonly used together: the aquastat manages the boiler's water loop, the thermostat manages room comfort and gives you the remote panel. This is a normal setup, not double-buying.

Wiring a thermostat or aquastat and plumbing in a Boiler Station are approachable for an experienced DIYer comfortable with basic electrical and plumbing work.
